66061: Beric the Briton Beric the Briton
By G.A. Henty / Prestonspeed Publications

One in a series of stories dealing with the wars of England, Beric the Briton deals with the period when the Romans were the masters of the country. It tells of the wariors who fought so bravely against Caesar, and who rose under Boadicea in a desperate effort to shake off the oppresive rule of Rome. Henty’s stories all revolve around a fictional boy hero during a fascinating period of history. His heroes are dilligent, courageous, intelligent and dedicated to their country and cause in the face, at times, of great peril.

76002: For the Temple For the Temple
By Prestonspeed Publications

A stirring tale of the last days of the Temple at Jerusalem. Robber bands and political infighting sets the stage for the Roman destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. In the face of overwhelming odds, John of Gamala does his best to save God’s Temple, harassing Roman work parties, burning Roman camps, defending Jerusalem during the Roman siege, and even fighting Titus himself in hand-to-hand combat–forging a relationship with the Roman leader that lasts until after the war. In spite of fighting a losing battle, John keeps his integrity. Blue hardcover with silver stamping; 333 pages, map illustration included.

(for mature readers - I looked through this and read parts of it. Definitely adults or late teens. Discusses ancient as well as modern practices and followers. I was disgusted at times…so be forewarned…)

(Deals with divorce/two homes issue. We thought the main story of the cat was cute…but do not necessarily agree with how they protrayed the underlying issue previously stated. Just our personal beliefs fwiw…)

4400972: Betsy-Tacy Series #2: Betsy-Tacy and Tib Betsy-Tacy Series #2: Betsy-Tacy and Tib
By Maud Hart Lovelace / Harpercollins Publishing

Betsy and Tacy are best friends. Then Tib moves into the neighborhood and the three of them start to play together. The grown-ups think they will quarrel, but they don’t. Sometimes they quarrel with Betsy’s and Tacy’s bossy big sisters, but they never quarrel among themselves. They are not as good as they might be. They cook up awful messes in the kitchen, throw mud on each other and pretend to be beggars, and cut off each other’s hair. But Betsy, Tacy, and Tib always manage to have a good time.

Or, find it at Book Closeouts HERE!

(For the record, *I* enjoy the Betsy Tacy books just as much as my children. ;-) Old-fashioned carefree innocence…if only the world raised such children these days. We’ve managed to for the most part…but we’re hard pressed to find similar friends for them. )

(All the children for all books unless otherwise noted.)

Plus, our second daughter read several other horse books to herself…they are her “passion” these days. ;-)

(All the children.)

*sigh* You know the old saying about the “best laid plans”… ;-) We are still trying to tie up the loose ends of our “old” school work. Since the awesome AK spring/summer weather hit, we’ve been hard pressed to keep ourselves inside. One afternoon we’ll do some school work and the next we won’t and on it goes. I’m not stressing it too much…since I’m the one that’s supposed to keep everyone on task and I haven’t been making the effort to do so I can’t let myself get too worked up about it. ;-) There are actually other things that are included in the mix that have stalled us too…a printer old enough now that I can’t find ink cartridges in town so that I’m not able to print out my second and third daughters math namely. That and $ funds. I just don’t have the cash to run down to the local copier place and do it. Then, again, I haven’t had the funds to purchase the next history package we wanted to complete. I’ve kept an eye out on Ebay but everything I need just hasn’t come up for sale at the same time or at what I think would be a reasonable price for used materials…and if I’m going to get it new then I’m just going to get it from a reputable company I want to patronize. I’m getting a little fed up with what some people consider “new” condition in their book descriptions. But, that’s another rant for another time… With that in mind, and the library reading program going on, I’ve decided just to plow ahead anyway with our “optional” reading list pulled together from Veritas and TOG. This past week the children mostly read “fun” books but hopefully *I* can be more diligent this next week in calling them together for our school read-alouds. Also, I have some very pressing household stuff going on that is sapping my time, attention and energy greatly. Basically, it’s like we are “moving” - a thorough clean out of home and storage and repacking with the goal of having the house completely “gutted” so the necessary repairs and remodeling can be done if plans come together as we are praying they do.

So, I think this will be the pattern through the summer - doing school work here and there - until I can get the printer/copier working and aquire the history package we want and until the “dust” clears with this household upheaval. :-)

TEACH Mag.

Filed under: General, Resources — Tamara @ 7:07 pm

I’ve been enjoying another issue of TEACH magazine. (I actually finished it a couple of weeks ago but haven’t been able to be online much lately.) The latest issue is focused on beauty…internal not external. Funny, before it arrived, I had been doing some “internal re-evaluating” and feeling promptings from the Holy Spirit on a couple of characters issues I needed to work on myself. Moms spend so much time focusing on training their children’s character that we often forget our own. It’s good to slow down and take stock of yourself at times…to respond to those gentle nudges from Him and to obey.
